Feeding and Swallowing Clinic

For children struggling with eating or drinking, as well as challenging mealtime behaviours, we offer a comprehensive feeding service with assessments and intervention delivered by specialist Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists at our Sloane Square clinic. Home and school visits can also be arranged.

Clients

We assess and treat children 6 months of age and older who are experiencing:

• Biting or chewing difficulties
• Cup or straw drinking difficulties
• Difficulty managing certain textures (e.g. lumpy or hard foods)
• Difficulty progressing from pureed to solid foods
• Food refusal behaviours
• Fussy/picky eating
• Restricted range of foods
• Sensory-based feeding difficulties

We are not able to provide support for infants with breastfeeding and bottle-feeding concerns or those who are weaning off of tube feeding.

Multidisciplinary Team

At LCP, we believe a collaborative approach results in the best outcomes for our clients. Your child can be seen by a team of specialists at our clinic depending on his or her needs:

Speech and Language Therapist
Occupational Therapist
Physiotherapist
Psychotherapist/Child Counsellor
Paediatrician

Our team may refer your child for support from additional professionals (e.g. Dietician, Paediatric Gastroenterologist, etc.) as required.

Therapy Approach

We provide a holistic feeding service that considers the individualised needs of each child and their family. The process begins with a specialist feeding assessment to identify the presenting issues and contributing causes. A tailored treatment plan will be designed based on the results to target specific skill areas. Treatment typically involves a combination of approaches which may include principles from:

• CAN-EAT Approach (using medical, motor, and therapeutic strategies in paediatric feeding)
• Food Chaining
• S.O.S Approach to Feeding
• TalkTools Sensory-Motor Approach

We provide individual and group feeding sessions.

Training

We provide training and advice for parents and caregivers in order to:

• Support safe feeding
• Develop age-appropriate eating and drinking skills
• Reduced the risk of long-term feeding difficulties
• Create positive mealtime experiences for all

We are also available for consultations with a child’s nursery or school.

Our Feeding and Swallowing Service uses a range of treatment approaches including:

  • feeding and dysphagia management from Dr. Maggie-Lee Huckabee and Dr. Joan Arvedson,
  • TalkTools® in the Sensory-Motor Approach to Feeding,
  • Dr. Kay Toomey and Dr. Erin Ross in the S.O.S. Approach to Feeding.

We are able to provide assessment and therapy to infants and children throughout their feeding development, and also therapy in managing difficulties with breastfeeding and bottle feeding, tongue and lip ties, reflux, commencing solids and texture progression, chewing skill development, drooling, overstuffing and pocketing food, oromotor concerns, coughing and choking during feeding and mealtimes, fussy and picky eaters, challenging mealtime behaviours, and implementing mealtime structures and routines.  We also provide individualised parent and caregiver training is provided in all of these areas.
